MAKING THE MOST OF A CAREER FAIR
You wouldn't go into an interview without researching the company; you should take the same approach for career fairs. Obtain a list of employers who will be at the fair and research those that you are interested in.
2. Dress for success.
First impressions are everlasting; make sure yours is positive! Business attire is appropriate in all cases. Keep jewelry to a minimum and wearing heavy perfume or cologne. If you are a smoker, avoid smoking right before walking into the fair. Turn cell phones off before entering the fair.
3. Polish your nonverbal skills.
Firm handshake, direct eye-contact and good posture are all part of making that excellent first impression.
4. Be prepared.
Have many copies of your resume and business cards handy. Bring along a pen to take notes to write down contact information.
5. Be comfortable with your "Elevator Speech".
Recruiters at career fairs have a lot of people to meet within a very short period of time; you probably only have a few minutes to properly market yourself and your skills, so make it count. Your "Elevator Speech" will highlight your key skills and give the recruiter an overview of what you have to offer.
6. Show your interest.
You did your research on the company, now is the time to show it off! Ask questions to the recruiter about specific aspects of the company or the positions they are hiring for. This show that you are both prepared and interested.
7. Network, network, network!
Career fairs are the perfect venue to establish contacts and get your resume out there, make sure you take advantage of it! Collect business cards of all representatives that you speak with, you never know when you might need their contact information down the road.
8. Follow up.
This is always a crucial step in job searching and career fairs are no exception. Recruiters meet with a lot of people during career fairs, and you want to make sure you stand out from the crowd by reminding them of the conversation you had. Send a thank you letter or email shortly after the fair reminding them of the conversation that you had that day and showing your appreciation for their time. Enclose a copy of your resume.
